Maintenance

- Adults need 20 gallons minimum (a 'long' footprint is ideal). Add 10 gallons per additional axolotl.
- No tank-mates. Other fish nip gills; rough décor tears skin.
- A secure lid prevents jumping — yes, they jump.
Beginner Setup Checklist
Have these before they arrive.
- 20+ gallon long tank with secure lid
- Sponge or canister filter (low flow)
- Fine sand substrate or bare bottom
- Water conditioner (chloramine-neutralising)
- Liquid test kit (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH)
- Precision thermometer
- Hides — caves, terracotta pots, dense plants
- Quality food: pellets + frozen bloodworms + nightcrawlers
- Fridge tub setup, ready for emergencies
